On the Iterated Hairpin Completion
نویسنده
چکیده
The (bounded) hairpin completion and its iterated versions are operations on formal languages which have been inspired by the hairpin formation in DNA-biochemistry. The paper answers two questions asked in the literature about the iterated hairpin completion. The first question is whether the class of regular languages is closed under iterated bounded hairpin completion. Here we show that this is true by providing a more general result which applies to all the classes of languages which are closed under finite union, intersection with regular sets, and concatenation with regular sets. In particular, all Chomsky classes and all standard complexity classes are closed under iterated bounded hairpin completion. In the second part of the paper we address the question whether the iterated hairpin completion of a singleton is always regular. In contrast to the first question, this one has a negative answer. We exhibit an example of a singleton language whose iterated hairpin completion is not regular, actually it is not context-free, but context-sensitive.

Iterated Hairpin Completions of Non-crossing Words
Iterated hairpin completion is an operation on formal languages that is inspired by the hairpin formation in DNA biochemistry. Iterated hairpin completion of a word (or more precisely a singleton language) is always a context-sensitive language and for some words it is known to be non-context-free. However, it is unknown whether regularity of iterated hairpin completion of a given word is decid...
متن کاملOn the Regularity of Iterated Hairpin Completion of a Single Word
Hairpin completion is an abstract operation modeling a DNA bio-operation which receives as input a DNA strand w = xαyα, and outputs w′ = xαyᾱx, where x denotes the WatsonCrick complement of x. In this paper, we focus on the problem of finding conditions under which the iterated hairpin completion of a given word is regular. According to the numbers of words α and α that initiate hairpin complet...
متن کاملFormal language theory of hairpin formations
The (bounded) hairpin completion, the hairpin lengthening, and their iterated versions are operations on formal languages which have been inspired by the hairpin formation in DNA biochemistry. In this paper we discuss the hairpin formations from a language theoretic point of view. The hairpin completion of a formal language has been defined in 2006. In the first paper on this topic it has been ...
متن کاملRegularity of Iterative Hairpin Completions of Crossing (2, 2)-Words
The hairpin completion is a formal operation inspired from DNA biochemistry. It is known that the (one step) hairpin completion of regular language is linear contextfree, but not regular in general. It is decidable whether the (one step) hairpin completion of regular language is regular. However, it is an open question whether the iterated hairpin completion of a regular language is regular, ev...
متن کاملOn the Hairpin Incompletion
Hairpin completion and its variant called bounded hairpin completion are operations on formal languages, inspired by a hairpin formation in molecular biology. Another variant called hairpin lengthening has been recently introduced and studied on the closure properties and algorithmic problems concerning several families of languages. In this paper, we introduce a new operation of this kind, cal...
